Week 4 Notes Homework and Videos

I HAVE PUT TOGETHER SOME TRAINING LOGS IN EXCEL OR PDF THAT YOU MIGHT LIKE TO USE.  REMEMBER TO READ THE DIRECTIONS AND WATCH AS YOU GO TO BE SURE YOU DON'T MISS A STEP.

NOTES REMAIN THE SAME FOR WEEK 4:

NOTE 1:  ALL TRAINING SHOULD BE DONE WITH TRAINING COLLAR AND TRAINING LEASH ON.

NOTE 2:  DO NOT LEAVE METAL TRAINING COLLAR OR TRAINING SLIP LEAD ON WHEN YOU ARE NOT ACTIVELY TRAINING YOUR DOG.

NOTE 3:  PLEASE PUT ON YOUR METAL TRAINING COLLAR CORRECTLY.  ALSO BE SURE TO HOLD THE LEASH CORRECTLY.

This is a link to a leash article on our business blog.  Leashes How to Hold Them and How to Fold Them.

NOTE 4:  START EVERYTHING AT THE BEGINNING IN ENVIRONMENTS AND WITH EQUIPMENT THAT ARE EASY FOR YOU.  YOU WANT TO GET COMFORTABLE WITH WHAT FOXIE HAS LEARNED AND HOW TO HANDLE FOXIE IN LOW DISTRACTIONS FIRST, SO THAT YOU WILL BEGIN TO FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE IN MORE COMPLICATED OR HIGHER DISTRACTIONS LATER.

NOTE 5:  THE GOALS ARE PLACES TO WORK TO IN THE FUTURE.  IF YOU DON'T MAKE THE GOAL, DON'T WORRY AS LONG AS YOU PUT IN THE WORK TOWARDS THE GOAL.  PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN CALL OR EMAIL ME WITH ANY TRAINING PROBLEMS THAT COME UP IN BETWEEN LESSONS.

NOTE 6:  IF YOU DON'T GET THROUGH ALL THE EXERCISES IN ONE DAY, YOU CAN JUST BE SURE THAT THE EXERCISES YOU DID NOT GET TO ARE DONE THE NEXT DAY.   THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE, I THINK, IS THE MOLDED SITS.   HOWEVER, THEY ALL WORK TOGETHER TO START TO CHANGE BEHAVIOR.

NOTE 7:  WHEN YOUR DOG WORKS WITH YOU AT HOME, YOU MAY NEED TO GO DOWN IN TIME AND THEN BUILD BACK UP TO WHERE YOUR DOG WAS TRAINING WITH ME (IF YOU ARE IN PACK LEARNING AND BOARD & TRAIN).  THE DOG WILL WORK BETTER FOR WHOEVER THEY WERE LAST WORKING WITH, SO OFTEN THE TIME NEEDS TO BE BUILT UP BY THE OWNER TO HAVE THE SAME SORT OF WORKING RELATIONSHIP.  ***REMEMBER THAT THE FOUR-IN-A-ROW PERFORMANCES WITHOUT NEEDING A CORRECTION OR CAJOLING ARE WAY MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE LENGTH OR DISTANCE HE CAN DO THIS AT RIGHT NOW.

NOTE 8:  TRAINING CAN BE DONE IN SEPARATE SESSIONS.  I LIKE TO KEEP MY SESSIONS AT 15 MINUTES IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE DAY (EXCEPT FOR LONG PLACE, SIT ON THE DOG, OR BEHAVIORAL DOWNS).  OTHERWISE, YOU CAN BURN YOUR DOG OR PUPPY OUT.

NOTE 9:  HERE IS THE TRAINING PROGRESSION YOU SHOULD TRY FOR YOURSELF.  WEEK 1: IS IN NON -DISTRACTIONS (AS POSSIBLE), TYPICALLY INSIDE AND EVERYTHING IN TRAINING IS ON LEASH  WEEK 2:  STARTING TO TAKE THE LEASH OFF FOR SOME EXERCISES AND BRINGING WELL KNOWN OTHER EXERCISES OUTSIDE (LIKE SIT AND TRANSITIONAL LEASH. WEEK 3:  IN THIS CASE WAS TRANSFERRING WHAT YOUR DOG KNOWS TO ECOLLAR STARTING WITH TRAINING WHEELS (LONG LINE OUTSIDE OR SHORT DRAGGING LEASH INSIDE) AND PROGRESSING TO OFF LEASH OUTSIDE.

NOTE 10:  MARKER WORDS ARE GOOD=GOOD JOB KEEP GOING YES=GOOD JOB YOU ARE RELEASED FROM THE EXERCISE AND NO=THAT IS NOT WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR.

NOTE 11:  BLUE TEXT GOES TO THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE EXERCISES.  [IT IS A LINK]

HOMEWORK SCHEDULE

Calming Behavioral Exercises (Rotate "Sit on The Dog" with "Long Place" exp. Monday "Sit on The Dog", Tuesday "Long Place)":

  1. (SAME) Sit On The Dog 30 + minutes Goal:  To get your dog to lay down on their own steam in five minutes or under.

  2. (CHANGED) Long Place 30 minutes Goal:  To have your dog become accustomed to staying on their place for 30 minutes.  If your dog breaks from the place, you don't need to restart the timer.   Just bring your dog back to the place and do not repeat the command.  Week 4 Change:  Practice this on the ecollar without a leash attached.  If you have problems at first, you can have her dragging the leash as you get used to this.  NOTE:  PRACTICE THIS BOTH ON THE ECOLLAR AND OFF.

Obedience Exercises:

NOTE 1:  REMEMBER YOU ONLY NEED TO DO AN HOUR A DAY.  IF YOU DON'T GET TO AN EXERCISE ONE DAY BASED ON TIME OR LIFE, JUST BE SURE TO DO IT THE NEXT DAY.

NOTE 2:  TRAINING FOR ME MEANS I NEED TO BE PRESENT WITH MY DOG.  SO MY TRAINING WORK IS OUTSIDE OF WALKING WITH SOMEONE ELSE AND SO ON.  I HAVE TO BE VERY PRESENT TO WORK ON TIMING AND BEING THERE WITH MY DOG.  YOU CAN OF COURSE STILL GO OFF AND DO NON TRAINING WALKS AND USE YOUR TRAINING, I JUST DON'T CALL THAT MY OFFICIAL FORMAL TRAINING TIME.

Ecollar Exercises (NOTE:  YOU SHOULD ROTATE YOUR PRACTICE BETWEEN ECOLLAR PRACTICE DAYS AND MANUAL EQUIPMENT OR NO EQUIPMENT (FOOD REWARD) PRACTICE DAYS):
  1. (NEW) Let's Go on Ecollar 10 minutes or less Goal:  To get three sets of four in a row in eventually less than  7 minutes.
  2. (NEW) Sits on Ecollar 5-10 minutes Goal:  To get three sets of four in a row in eventually less than  5 minutes.  NOTE:  EXERCISE WOULD LOOK LIKE BELOW EXCEPT WITH ECOLLAR ON.

  3. (NEW) Circle Sit Stays on Ecollar 7 minutes or less Goal:  To get 4  in a row sit stays while widening the circle to a room and/or 15 feet from you outside.  Don't rush it though, if you aren't honest about your performance at a lesser time, you will leave holes.

  4. (NEW) Send to Place on Ecollar 7 minutes or less Goal:  To get three sets of four in a row in eventually less than  7 minutes and increase the handler distance from the place.  NOTE:  YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SIT AT FIRST LIKE I DID.  YOU COULD WORK UP TO THAT THOUGH.

  5. (NEW) Circle Place on Ecollar 7 minutes or less  Goal:  To get 4  in a row circle places while widening the circle to a room and/or 15 feet from you outside.  Don't rush it though, if you aren't honest about your performance at a lesser time, you will leave holes.

  6. (NEW) Down Command on Ecollar 10 minutes or less Goal:  To get three sets of four in a row in eventually less than  10 minutes. ECOLLAR NOTE: FIRST USE THE VERBAL CORRECTION "NO".  IF YOUR DOG DOES NOT LIE DOWN, THEN GIVE THEM 1 ECOLLAR TAP A SECOND UNTIL THEY DO.  UNLESS, YOUR DOG IS TOTALLY CONFUSED, AND THEN JUST LURE YOUR DOG DOWN WITH FOOD.

Training Exercises Using Food and/or Collar and Leash:
  1. (NEW) Attention to Name 5 minutes or less Goal:  To get three sets of four in a row

  2. (NEW) Leave it Reps 5 minutes or less Goal:  To get three sets of four in a row.

  3. 4. (CHANGED) Circle Sit Stays 5+ minutes Goal:  To get to 1-minute circle stays inside four times in a row with the leash dropped and walking around the room in not more than 5 minutes.  Remember you can back up steps if you are having a hard time (exp holding the leash, closer circle, less time, and so on).  Week 4 Change:  Try this off leash and ecollar on rotating days.

  5. (CHANGED) Send to Place 5 + minutes Goal:  To get three sets of four in a row repetitions without needing a correction.Week 4 Change:  Try this off leash and ecollar on rotating days.

  6. (CHANGEDCircle Place 5 + minutes Goal:  To get our 1-minute circle places in a row in not much more than 5 minutes.Week 4 Change:  Try this off leash and ecollar on rotating days.

  7. (CHANGED) Let's Go 7+ minutes Goal:  To get three sessions of four in-a-row repetitions without needing corrections (using food reward is fine and encouraged). Week 4 Change:  Try this off leash and ecollar on rotating days.NOTE:  WE DID NOT FORMALLY PRACTICE THIS EXERCISE FROM THE BEGINNING AS WE SHOULD.   I AM PUTTING A VIDEO OF ME DOING IT WITH ANOTHER DOG IN CASE YOU WANT TO START THIS WAY.

  8. (SAME) Walks Outside (or inside) 15 + minutes (remember you can work on stay, let's go, and lured heel on these walks.  You do not need to do exercises twice.)  Goal:  To get your dog used to walking on a loose leash.  Also to get the dog and owner working like a team. The methods on here are (1) Slack Leash Moving and Tight Leash Stand Still, (2) Lured Heeling and Sits (3) Leash Behind Leg NOT FOR SHAWN, and (4) Sit Stays.  The videos below are the strategies I use (None of the walking videos came out on my phone, so I am going to use Maggie for this.  NOTE 1: SHAWN SHOULD PRACTICE THESE INSIDE FIRST.
NOTE:  YOU CAN USE THE ECOLLAR LET'S GO ON YOUR WALK WITH THE 6' LEASH BY STOPPING AND SAYING LET'S GO.  YOU WANT HER TO PHYSICALLY RETURN TO YOU AND ACKNOWLEDGE YOU.  THEN YOU CAN RELEASE HER.
