Week 1 Accomplishments and Videos

Housetraining:   Week 1, Sandy has only had an accident on the first day.   On week 1, we limit her freedom and come up with a schedule to take her out.   This is so that on Week 2, we can test and proof that schedule.  No surprises have come up yet (like her pooping and/or peeing her in crate or puppy pen).

The general rules we use for housetraining are on this link to the article.

NOTE:  Text in blue below goes to directions for the exercise.

General Training NotesIn Week 1, we work in non-distracting indoor areas, as you will see in the videos.  This is to let them focus and learn the commands first before we bring this outside or in more distracting  environments.

Calming/Chill Behavioral Exercises:

Sit on The Dog:  This exercise teaches a dog or puppy how to chill on their own.  This helps with impulse control and reaching a calm state.  This is a pure behavioral exercise as it has no command associated with it.

Long Place:  This is used for longer stays.  This exercise allows for dogs to get comfortable on a bordered place object while the owner does other things.  Technically this is both a command and a behavioral exercise.

Obedience Commands:

Sit On First Command:  Part of walking nicely on leash is the ability to stop when needed.  This command is later on added as a part of the heel command which becomes an auto sit after practice.  That means when you stop your dog knows to sit without an additional command.  This is done in three steps by first molding, then interim correction, and then plain collar correction.   There is a goal to get to each time.

Sit First Command with Collar correction if needed:

Place CommandThe place command (also listed above with the "long place" step 4) is a command that allows you to send your dog to their place object to stay there for awhile.  This helps with impulse control and learning to chill for your dog or puppy.  These are the first three steps to train this (while "long place" is step 4:

Circle Place:

Heeling:  Heeling is a command where you are teaching your dog to focus on their position.  In heeling the position is that your leg lines up with their shoulder when walking.   When walking, your dog's head should be slightly in front of your legs so that you can see them out of the corner of your eye.  This command is generally taught in these three steps.
